President's Welcome

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Association for Chinese Music Research, a community of scholars dedicated to the study of Chinese music. Since its beginning in 1987, the ACMR has maintained a broad membership in North America and internationally.

Community plays an important role in our professional lives and is key in the success of organizations. It is through the ACMR community that we can advocate, encourage, disseminate, and support research in Chinese music. To further these endeavors, we have the annual meetings, the ACMR Newsletter, the email discussion list, and the website.

One of the missions of ACMR is to promote research from all members. To achieve this goal, we have created two prizes named after two prominent ethnomusicologists and co-founders of ACMR. The “Barbara Barnard Smith Student Paper Prize” and “Rulan Chao Pian Publication Prize” will begin to accept submissions after the 2009 meeting in Mexico. This gives us a chance to honor Professors Smith and Pian for their contributions to our field and ACMR.

Lastly, I would like to thank all the board members for their dedication and vision, and most of all to the members who keep our field vibrant.

Frederick Lau
President
