ACMR Call for Presentations

The ASSOCIATION FOR CHINESE MUSIC RESEARCH will hold its 2010 annual meeting on Thursday, November 11, 2010, at 8:00-10:00 PM at the Wilshire Grand Los Angeles in conjunction with the 55th Annual meeting of the SOCIETY FOR ETHNOMUSICOLOGY.

The program committee invites papers and fieldwork reports in Chinese music for presentation. Submissions from graduate students are particularly welcome. Please submit a 200-words abstract by email to Fred Lau <fredlau@hawaii.edu> by October 18, 2010.

ACMR Bibliography Update 2010

The ACMR Bibliography Update 2010 (PDF) has been published. This update, prepared by Lei Ouyang Bryant, Valerie Samson, and Gloria Wong, lists works published mainly in the last few years, but also includes some earlier works, especially in the new category "Chapters in Books." Publications are mostly in English, but include a few recent works in other Western European languages.

Society for Asian Music Small Grant 2010-2011

The Society for Asian Music is pleased to announce the availability of up to two small grants to support research in Asian music.  Grants will range from $1500-$3000 and are available from May 2010 to May 2011.

Applicants must be full-time graduate students enrolled in U.S. institutions and may use these funds to supplement other grants.  Grants are to be used for research, including fieldwork, pre-dissertation research, travel, language study, and other related activities.

ACMR Call for Spring 2010 Newsletter Submissions

We're currently preparing the Spring 2010 issue (vol.16, no.1) of the ACMR Newsletter and would like to encourage ACMR members and friends to submit notes of recent publications, theses/dissertations, news of institutions and individuals, news of scholarly and performing activities, etc.

Video clip of Jingju (Beijing opera) The White Snake

Video clip of the University of Hawaii's performance of this well known Jingju (Beijing opera) in its English language world premiere enacts the famous legend of the snake spirit who descends to earth as a beautiful woman. Guest Artists from China have been in residence since August training the UH student performers. Adapted and Taught by Lu Genzhang, Zhang Ling, and Zhang Xigui Translation by Director Elizabeth Wichmann-Walczak and Hui-Mei Chang. Performances:  Feb 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13 at 8pm; Feb 7 & 14 at 2pm. ACMR Call for Paper Submissions

Happy new year from the ACMR board of officers!

This is a final call for submissions to the Barbara B. Smith and the Rulan Chao Pian 2009 paper prizes.

The Barbara B. Smith prize for the best student paper is awarded on a yearly basis to recognize an outstanding student paper in the field of Chinese music, broadly defined, presented at the annual national Society for Ethnomusicology meeting. The prize is accompanied by a $100 award.
